Itinerary
Day 9 (Sunday 6 January) :
Nuremberg to Bamberg |
The well preserved medieval center of Bamberg justifies its
World Heritage designation
|
Say farewell to the other members of your group who are
leaving in Nuremberg this morning.
The rest of us will continue on to
Amsterdam. We proceed on along the Main-Danube Canal
to the river Main.
This afternoon we arrive in
Bamberg and enjoy a walking tour of this medieval gem, which
was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Marvel at
the breathtaking cathedral, the Old Town Hall that straddles
the river, and the city's serpentine streets with charming
houses and 18th-century mansions.
We have some free time before
continuing our cruise, now on the Main River.
Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch,
Dinner |
Day 10 (Monday 7 January) :
Würzburg |
The Marienberg Castle towers over the Main River
|
This afternoon we arrive in Würzburg,
the capital of Lower Franconia.
Known as "The Pearl of the Romantic
Road", Würzburg is surrounded by sloping hills covered with vineyards.
During our tour of the area, we
will see the major sights including the
magnificent Residential Palace.
The evening is free to
explore Würzburg on your own.
Included meals - Dinner |
Day 11 (Tuesday 8 January) :
Wertheim and Miltenberg |
A river cruiser moving in to dock at Miltenberg
You don't see this sort of scene in an American town.
|
Our first stop today is in
Wertheim where we'll enjoy free time - perhaps
browsing the market square and the shops before a
fascinating glass-blowing performance onboard ship.
Then
we cruise on to Miltenberg for a guided walking tour along narrow,
cobble-stoned streets with gabled, half-timbered houses.
Tonight, the ship sails leaving Bavaria, Franconia and the
Main River behind.
Included Meals: Breakfast,
Lunch, Dinner |
Day 12 (Wednesday 9 January) :
Main - Rhine Castles - Koblenz |
One of the many castles you'll see during today's cruising.
|
This morning we arrive in Mainz, and disembark for a
walking tour of this beautiful town, famous as the home of
Gutenberg (inventor of the printing press). There is free time to explore before the ships
sails at lunch time.
Our afternoon cruising takes us through the Rhine
Gorge, the most beautiful stretch of the river, passing
castle after castle.
All Germany is rich in castles but the romantic Rhine Valley
- the heartland of the old Holy Roman Empire - has a
particularly high density of important medieval
military buildings. Some are ruins, but many, like Marksburg
Castle, have survived the ravages of war, fire and neglect.
Some are fascinating windows into the age of chivalry and
the development of this fascinating form of military
construction.
Don't miss the legendary Lorelei Rock,
where sweet songs of local beauties are fabled to have lured
enchanted sailors to their doom.
We arrive in Koblenz this
evening with some free time to explore on your own.
Included Meals: Breakfast,
Lunch, Dinner |
Day 13 (Thursday 10 January) :
Koblenz - Cologne |

city, situated at the junction of the Rhine and Mosel
Rivers.
After time in Koblenz,
we continue to Cologne where we will visit the
city's glorious 13th-century Gothic cathedral.
Included Meals: Breakfast,
Lunch, Dinner |
